MY PARENTS SAID SHE’S “TOO BIG” FOR ME—BUT THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT I’M ABOUT TO DO

Last Sunday, I brought my fiancée, Mallory, to meet my parents for the first time. Mallory’s tall, platinum blonde, and not a size two, but she’s the warmest, sharpest person I know. Despite this, my mom barely smiled, and my dad wouldn’t look at her.

When Mallory stepped out to take a call, my mom asked if I was sure about marrying someone “that big” and said it wouldn’t be a good match, while my dad mentioned “health” and how I’d “resent it later.”

I felt shocked and said nothing, but later, Mallory noticed something was off. I realized I had to decide whether to keep playing it safe with my family or finally be honest with them.

As I lay awake that night, feeling guilty about my parents’ comments, I promised myself I’d talk to them soon. The next morning, Mallory was happily making pancakes, wearing old sweatpants, and the smell of breakfast filled the room.
