Moving north:Ā HurricaneĀ MelissaĀ is anĀ ā€œextremely dangerousā€ Category 3Ā storm as it nearsĀ eastern Cuba, after a historic Jamaica landfall among the strongest on record in the Atlantic.

Impact so far:Ā Extensive damage is reported toĀ homes, hospitals, and schoolsĀ in southwestern Jamaica. Prime MinisterĀ Andrew HolnessĀ declared the nation aĀ disaster areaĀ on Tuesday.

Deaths:Ā At leastĀ 7 fatalitiesĀ are linked to the storm—3 in JamaicaĀ during preparations,Ā 3 in Haiti, andĀ 1 in the Dominican Republic.

  • Intensity:Ā Melissa briefly restrengthened toĀ Category 4 (130 mph)Ā over very warm Caribbean waters before settling back toĀ Category 3 (125 mph)Ā as ofĀ 2 a.m. ET—stillĀ ā€œextremely dangerous,ā€Ā per the National Hurricane Center.
