Celebrities React to Jimmy Kimmel’s Show Cancellation

The suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! following remarks about Charlie Kirk’s assassination has ignited a wave of backlash from Hollywood. ABC confirmed the show would be preempted indefinitely, citing controversy over Kimmel’s comments, which criticized reactions to Kirk’s death.

Comedian Wanda Sykes, who was scheduled to appear on the show, criticized both the suspension and political leadership in a video on Instagram, saying, “Hey, for those of you who pray, now’s the time to do it. Love you, Jimmy.” Ben Stiller posted on X (formerly Twitter) simply: “This isn’t right.”

Jamie Lee Curtis shared her thoughts in a podcast interview and Instagram post, emphasizing that while she disagreed with Kirk’s ideas, Kimmel should not have been silenced. Comedian Mike Birbiglia, who once filled in for Kimmel, added, “If you’re a comedian + don’t call out the insanity of pulling Kimmel off the air — don’t bother spouting off about free speech anymore.”

Journalist Megyn Kelly noted the intense viewer feedback that may have influenced ABC’s decision. Supermodel Christie Brinkley wrote on Instagram: “We must protect their and our First Amendment rights!” Actress Sophia Bush commented on Twitter: “The First Amendment doesn’t exist in America anymore. Period. Fascism is here and it’s chilling.” From actors to comedians to journalists, the message is clear: many in the entertainment industry see the suspension as a threat to free speech. The debate over censorship and artistic expression continues, and Hollywood shows no signs of slowing its vocal opposition to the network’s decision.
