Expert tells parents to ask baby’s consent when changing diapers

Should Parents Ask Babies for Consent Before Changing Diapers?

Australian sexuality educator Deanne Carson sparked debate by suggesting parents should ask their babies for permission before changing diapers. Her idea isn’t about expecting a verbal “yes,” but about building a “culture of consent” from birth. Carson believes narrating actions and observing body language teaches respect and body autonomy.

Critics call the idea unrealistic and unnecessary, arguing babies are too young to understand consent. Some mocked her online, comparing the concept to asking a cat before cleaning its litter tray. Others called it “lefty lunacy” and questioned Carson’s expertise.

However, supporters say talking to babies promotes trust and communication. Even if babies can’t consent, many believe it’s a positive step toward respectful parenting. In the end, it may come down to parenting style—whether you ask for consent or simply respond with care and attention.
