Shopper Stunned After Finding Snake Hidden in Aldi Broccoli

What started as an ordinary grocery trip quickly turned into a frightening ordeal for British grandfather Neville Linton. After purchasing broccoli from Aldi, he unwrapped it at home only to discover a live snake nestled among the florets. Neville, who has a lifelong fear of snakes, described the experience as “absolutely terrifying,” particularly since he shares his home with his disabled son and elderly mother-in-law.

At first glance, he thought the creature was an insect, but when it moved, he realized it was a snake. Unsure what to do, he immediately called his sister, who confirmed his shocking discovery. The reptile was safely contained and taken to Dudley Zoo, where staff identified it as a young ladder snake.

Native to southwestern Europe, ladder snakes are non-venomous and pose no threat to humans. Experts explained that incidents like this occasionally occur when snakes are accidentally harvested with crops and transported overseas. While unsettling, they emphasized there was no public danger.

Aldi issued an apology to Neville and his family, stating they would launch a full investigation into how the mishap occurred while reiterating their commitment to strict food safety standards. Neville, however, felt the compensation offered fell short, especially considering the potential risk to his vulnerable family members. As for the snake, it has since been given a permanent home at the zoo, where it will serve as part of educational programs about wildlife and biodiversity.
