“A Night on I-95 That Sparked a Wave of Kindness”

In late 2017, Kate McClure was driving near I-95 outside Philadelphia when her car unexpectedly ran out of gas. It was late, she was alone, and she had no way to get herself to safety. With cars rushing by and no gas station within walking distance, she found herself stranded and increasingly anxious.

Then, something unexpected happened.

A homeless man she only knew as “Johnny” approached her. Instead of asking for money—or even saying much at all—he told her to wait in her car, lock the doors, and stay safe. Johnny then walked to a nearby gas station, used the last $20 he had to buy a can of gasoline, and brought it back so she could get her car running again. He asked for nothing in return.

Kate didn’t have cash with her that night and couldn’t repay him, but the moment stayed with her. Over the next few weeks, she returned to the same area to find Johnny. She brought him warm clothes, food, basic supplies, and some money whenever she could. A friendship began to form, and she learned more about his life—how he had fallen on hard times, how he had served in the military, and how difficult it was for him to get back on his feet.

Wanting to help in a more meaningful way, Kate and her boyfriend came up with an idea. They created a GoFundMe campaign with a modest goal of $10,000—just enough to secure Johnny’s first and last month’s rent, help him buy a used car, and give him a chance to rebuild his life.

But something remarkable happened.

The story spread across social media and news outlets. People around the world were moved by the kindness Johnny had shown despite having almost nothing. Donations poured in rapidly—$50, $100, even thousands at a time. Within days, the total exploded past $250,000.

What began as a simple moment on a dark road became a story of compassion that captured global attention. A single act of selflessness from a man who had so little inspired tens of thousands of strangers to show generosity in return.
